Phil has been a licensed physical therapist since 1998 and has owned his private practice, Tavo Total Health (formerly titled Tavo PT & Fitness), since August 2004. Phil earned his Masters of Science in Physical Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University and is an Expert John F. Barnes Myofascial Release (JFB MFR) Practitioner.
Interests in health, wellness, and rehabilitative medicine combined with early life experiences with injury and chronic pain led Phil down the path of becoming a physical therapist. After working as a traditional PT for 7 years, Phil shifted his focus and study to a modality that transformed his own chronic pain: Myofascial Release (MFR) as taught by the creator of the modality, John F. Barnes, PT. Since 2005, Phil has become a highly skilled MFR practitioner and truly enjoys assisting patients in their own journeys toward optimal health and wellness.
Phil believes in treating the entire person – body, mind, and spirit. His primary modality is authentic John F. Barnes MFR, but he sometimes feels called to integrate complementary modalities such as sound healing, breath work, and guided meditation/visualization into his sessions. Phil especially enjoys working with patients who fully understand that a healing journey is a team effort. In 2013, Phil co-authored and published a book about the healing power of MFR, What’s In Your Web?: Stories of Fascial Freedom.
Outside of work Phil enjoys drawing, reading, movies, time in nature, travel, and time with loved ones.
Phil has been practicing the John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release Approach since 2006. He sees clients on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
